What is Yoga & How Do I Experience It?

Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root word ‘yuj’, which means – to yoke, or union. Yoga can be seen textbook defined as “a series of physical, mental, and spiritual disciplines to attain self-realization, liberation, and Moksha (salvation).” In simpler terms – A path to unite with the Mind / Body / Soul / Spirit.

Inspired by a YTT journaling exercise from my first day of training, here is how I try to define and explain how I experience yoga in my own words ~

Yoga is peace, yoga is tranquility. Yoga is the process of committing to myself to better connect to my mind, body, soul, my home planet, and beyond. Yoga to me is a sacred connection to the divine; the sacred inside me, others, and spirit. Yoga is more than just a pose, an asana, though it plays a tremendous role. As I flow through Asanas, it symbolizes flowing through life. Releasing that stagnant stuck energy held within my physical body, I can allow my thoughts and emotions to more easily flow in and out of my body; and in turn able to flow through life much more smoothly. Yoga is a great discipline that gives me the structure and balance that I need in my life to stay open, centered, and connected to all things. Ultimately cultivating that peace & love found within.

Yoga has changed how I see, experience, react, and witness daily life. From noticing when I am gripping the steering wheel, to being able to notice unhealthy patterns much quicker. Being the awareness behind it all, without judgment & with pure acceptance.

All & all I have tried my best to explain in words what yoga means & is to me. But quite frankly no words can describe such ecstasy and joy that a yogic lifestyle can bring for you & me in this lifetime, and beyond.
